Roskomnadzor lifts Telegram blocking in Russia

Roskomnadzor has lifted access restrictions to the Telegram messenger due to Pavel Durov’s readiness to counteractterrorist activities and extremism.

After coordination with the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation,Roskomnadzor announced its readiness to cooperate with all Russian Internet companies in order to prevent the spread of terrorist and extremist information, child pornography, as well as the propaganda of suicide and drugs.

Recently, the founder of the messenger Pavel Durovstated that his team had optimized ways to detect and remove extremist propaganda, and the privacy of personal correspondence does not interfere with the fight against terrorism. According to Durov, the unblocking of Telegram in Russia could have a positive effect on the innovative development and national security of the country.

It all started because of the claims of the FSB, which fileda lawsuit in the Tagansky District Court of Moscow demanding that Telegram be blocked in Russia due to the fact that Durov refuses to hand over the keys for decrypting user correspondence. In the spring of 2018, the court granted the FSB's request, after which Russian IP addresses were blocked to prevent users from accessing the messenger.

The FSB began to show increased interest in Telegramafter information about the creation of Gram tokens and the ICO appears. However, due to lengthy legal proceedings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, which accused Telegram of illegally conducting an ICO, last month Durov announced the termination of work on the Telegram Open Network (TON) project.

Let us recall that at the end of last year the Association forInternet Copyright Protection (AZAPI) sent a letter to the SEC with a request to recognize the Telegram messenger as a pirated resource. According to AZAPI, the number of copyright violations on Telegram is growing, and the management of the messenger applies only temporary and mild punishments to violators.
