New generation police dogs being trained to sniff out electronics

In today's world, weapons and drugs are not the only key evidence.

Minnesota law enforcement has begun actively training Labradors to track down small devices such as smartphones, USB drives, and microSD cards. The animal is able to recognize triphenylphosphine oxide, a chemical that is often presentin electronics coatings.

During training, they are motivated by food until they start hunting for the smell on their own in order to receive a reward.

According to the police, at presenttime this skill in dogs is important, because on compact digital media you can find key evidence of various crimes, from official misconduct to sexual violence and child abduction.

One of the Labradors has already helped uncover evidence in a child pornography case.

We also previously reported that Massachusetts police tested the robot dog Spot in their operations.
