Visa, eBay and Mastercard have left Libra. Uber and Lyft remain in the project from Facebook

Payment companies Mercado Pago, Visa, Stripe, Mastercard and online trading platform eBay have withdrawn from the Libra digital currency projectfrom Facebook, reports the Financial Times.

“We respect the vision of the Libra Association. However, eBay decided not to move forward as a founding member. We are currently focused on introducing a managed payment option for our users. ”EBay representatives said.

In turn, Stripe said that Libra has potential, but the company so far will focus on supporting projects that develop online commerce on a global scale:

“We will closely monitor the progress of the project and remain open for cooperation with the Libra association at later stages”, - representatives of Stripe added.

Visa also said it will postpone its entry into the Libra Association for now:

“We will continue to conduct the assessment and our final decision will depend on a number of factors, including the ability of the association to fully comply with the mandatory requirements of regulators”

Nevertheless, the company emphasized that the potential of solutions based on blockchain technology exceeds the capabilities of existing payment systems:

“Visa's strong interest in Libra is due toour belief that well-regulated blockchain-based networks can add value to digital payments for a huge number of people, especially from developing countries. ”

Calibra CEO David Marcus writes that he respects Visa and Mastercard’s decision to hold back Libra until regulatory uncertainty is removed.

According to him, the release of such significant participants does not mean that it is time to put an end to the project. Marcus admitted that this is not good news in the context of the short-term prospects of Libra.
