A group of researchers is developing an artificial intelligence system that is able to interpret a person’s thoughts from his actions.
Advanced Research OfficeUS Department of Defense projects have allocated $ 6.6 million for this. Scientists from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh, as well as specialists from the military-industrial company Northrop Grumman, are engaged in the creation of an AI that understands what people really think.
The ultimate goal is a software agent or machine that understandsfeatures of a person’s social behavior and emotions, and is able to accurately determine his mood or thoughts by interpreting body language, speech patterns, word choice and other signals.
This technology could potentially beuse for commercial purposes, for example, selecting advertising based on a person’s current mood based on information from surveillance cameras or assessing the reaction of the target audience. However, the fact that the Pentagon is funding the research suggests the military is interested in using artificial intelligence for sinister purposes, such as interrogation.
According to the developers, the system is now capable of detecting embarrassment, fatigue, an object of attention of a person, and is already starting to fix a lie.
Despite the successes in the development of such agglorhythms, engineers are simultaneously finding new ways to deceive them.
