Former employee of the nuclear center in Sarov fined for mining on a supercomputer

Recently, a trial was held of a former engineer of a nuclear center located in the city of Sarov, Nizhny Novgorod regionarea. For mining on the center’s supercomputer, the man was fined 450,000 rubles.

Former employee of the All-RussianResearch Institute of Experimental Physics (RFNC-VNIIEF) was accused of unlawful access to computer information (part 3 of article 272 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) and violation of the rules for the operation of means of storage, processing or transmission of computer information (part 1 of article 272 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) .

An investigation was also conducted into two moreemployees of the center, however, a criminal case was opened against them on charges of creating, using and distributing malware for computers (Article 273 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). At the moment, the case has already been referred to court.

Nuclear center engineers detained for miningcryptocurrencies on a supercomputer with a power of 1 petaflops back in early 2018. In this case, initially the supercomputer was not connected to the Internet, however, engineers were able to solve this issue.
