Ethereum Core developers plan to switch the network to Proof-of-Stake in August

According to Ethereum developer Preston WangLuna, the project team hopes to switch the cryptocurrency network to the PoS consensus algorithm before the negative effects of the “difficulty bomb” begin to appear.

During the Permissionless conference he reported, that for the so-called “merger” procedure Everything is ready and final tests are now being carried out. If force majeure circumstances do not arise during the preparation process, the team plans to implement the transition in August 2022.

Preston's colleague Justin Drake said thecompleting the merger is a top priorityfor developers, since in case of a delay, the network will begin to deteriorate due to the “difficulty bomb” – additions to the Ethereum blockchain code, which greatly slows down its operation after a certain point to complicate mining and encourage the abandonment of PoW. If you delay the transition to the new algorithm, the team will have to release a special update to delay the negative effects of its “explosion”.

Earlier this week, Ethereum Core developersalso reported on the upcoming tests of the PoS consensus layer on the Ropsten test network, which should start on June 8. This experience should simulate what will happen to the main cryptocurrency network as a result of the merger with Beacon Chain.

Upon successful transition to PoS in August, inEthereum's transformation roadmap is only 1 step away – introduction of segmented second-level blockchains – scheduled for early 2023.
