New app can diagnose diabetes using smartphone camera

Scientists have developed a method for detecting type 2 diabetes using photoplethysmography on a smartphone.

Mobile phones have long ceased to be usedOnly for calls, reading text messages and taking photos. Eventually, they evolved into portable computers with additional capabilities. Now a team of researchers from the University of California, San Francisco, has developed an algorithm that can diagnose diabetes without any equipment other than a smartphone.

The program uses the built-in cameraand a flashlight for identifying vascular damageusing photoplethysmography – methods for determining volumetric changes in blood circulation. After applying the fingertip to the lens, the algorithm tracks color changes due to pulsation from the heartbeat and performs photoplethysmography.

Test results showedthat the system diagnoses diabetes with 81% accuracy, and correctly determines its absence in 95% of cases. This indicator is comparable to the effectiveness of mammography and other similar tests, and its speed and painlessness allow it to be repeated without problems.

This method may be very popular, since according to research, only half of people with type 2 diabetes know that they have this disease.

In March, scientists also created a breath tester to measure blood sugar levels.
