Apple is developing an application with a digital key function and driver ID.

The patent application describes the technologywhich will allow the device to identify the owner of the car and authorized persons to obtain access rights to drive the vehicle. The application should be released with the next version of iOS and will support several functions at once.

In addition to creating a virtual ignition key, it will make it possible to safely store digital copies of your passport and driver's license. According todevelopers, all this will fully replace physical identifiers.

This technology will take time to come outto the mass market, since initially it will only be compatible with new BMW vehicles released after July 2020. In addition to the technical aspects, the company will need to overcome some regulatory hurdles.

Currently, only Tesla cars can be started with a smartphone. However, companies such as Google, Samsung, LG and OnePlus are also moving in this direction.

Apple is also patenting a technology that will automatically hide the contents of the smartphone screen from prying eyes.
