Scientists have created yeast to convert wood into ethanol

Researchers have developed a more efficient method for converting wood pulp and agricultural waste into ethanol using a new yeast strain.

Plant biomass is rich in naturala carbon source for biofuel production. However, converting wood to ethanol complicates its intrinsic properties that make it difficult to chemically degrade. Now scientists at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories have found an inexpensive way to solve this problem.

The team createda special yeast strain that, together witha mixture of non-toxic chemicals and commercial enzymes effectively converts wood into ethanol. The entire conversion process can take place continuously and in one container.

The method allows you to recycle basic typeswoody and herbal biomass, and mixtures thereof. The feasibility study showed that the cost of the alcohol produced in this way in terms of the liter equivalent of gasoline is about $ 0.5.

Scientists expect their technology to accelerate the transition from gasoline to biofuels in transportation, as well as reduce the cost of aviation fuel.

Earlier, we also reported on the technology of converting wood waste into high-quality plastic.
