A tweet posted early Sunday morning on behalf of Narendra Modi announced India's adoption of the first cryptocurrency as legal tender.
The hackers attached a link to a fake website where citizens could "get their BTC" attached to the message.The fake tweet was quickly deleted, but it was retweeted by several hundred people.
The Prime Minister has previously publicly highlighted the risks associated with cryptocurrency, including in international and domestic meetings with government officials.
