eBay registers trademarks for NFTs and the Metaverse

E-commerce giant eBay has filed two trademark applications for a wide range of services related to non-fungible tokens and the metaverse.

This was reported by a lawyer from the Bureau of Patents andUnited States Trademark Office (USPTO) Michael Kondoudis. Judging by the applications, the company plans to work with platforms for trading downloadable virtual goods, as well as for creating and trading non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

The description of applications also indicates softwaresoftware for managing and confirming transactions with collectible tokens, as well as computer programs for using, creating, trading, storing and transferring NFTs using blockchain and smart contracts.

Patent applications were filed shortly beforeas eBay announced its acquisition of non-fungible token trading platform KnownOrigin. eBay CEO Jamie Iannone noted that the e-commerce platform began actively working with NFTs back in May last year, as more and more people are interested in this industry.

“eBay intends to be the platform where...people from all over the world will be able to find a rare or unique addition to their collection. That’s why we’ve been adding more digital collectibles,” Iannone said.

Interest in the metaverse and NFTs demonstratesmany well-known companies. This spring, payment systems American Express and Mastercard also registered several trademarks related to these areas. Additionally, Mastercard this month announced it was partnering with NFT platforms to allow customers to directly purchase collectible tokens.
