Yahoo Launches a Series of Metaverse Projects in Hong Kong

The day afterMeta Platforms, formerly known as Facebook, has announced plans to launch metaverse projects in Hong Kong, and Yahoo has laid out a similar plan.

American Internet media company Yahooannounced that it is launching a series of events related to metaverses and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in Hong Kong. According to the South China Morning Post, the company will hold a series of virtual events and concerts for residents of the Asian state in the Decentraland metaverse.

According to the head of the department for work withYahoo audience member Lorraine Cheung, the company sees the metaverse as an attractive alternative for Hong Kong residents looking to socialize and be entertained while the city is under coronavirus restrictions. Last week, Hong Kong introduced a nationwide mandate requiring a negative COVID-19 test to enter public places.

With the help of the metaverse, the company hopesprovide people with the opportunity to lead a social life, regardless of the time of day or location. The company will also launch an NFT exhibition called The Abyss of Kwun Tong, in which local artists will recreate Hong Kong's historic Kwun Tong district in virtual reality.

"Yahoo Hong Kong has always strivedto provide a wide range of online services tailored to people's daily lives, including using the latest technologies to improve user experience,” Cheng said.

According to Yahoo's Chief Creative OfficerRoger Li's Creative Studios, some 86% of Gen Z - people aged 20 to 30 - expect their digital experiences and interactions to be inextricably linked to the real world, and more than 80% of Hong Kongers are interested in or are already involved in similar immersive experience.

Previously, the creators of the popular horse racing game ZED RUN announced the launch of their own story-driven metaverse.
