Global payments giant Mastercard has filed 15 new trademark applications related to cryptocurrencies,fintech and metaverse technologies.
According to trademark lawyer MikeKondudis, the company's inquiries indicate that it plans to host multimedia files accompanied by non-fungible tokens (NFTs), create a metaverse payment and e-commerce transaction processing system, and a crypto asset trading platform.
The data from Kondudis show that the applicationMastercard included trademarks for downloadable media files containing NFT-authenticated images, text, audio, and video, as well as e-commerce software that would enable electronic business transactions in the metaverse.
In addition, the firm has applied for virtual credit, debit and prepaid cards, as well as the ability to process payments using digital card data in the metaverse.
Mastercard has also registered trademarks for performances in the metaverse and for online communities associated with digital assets.
Kondudis notes that the number of NFT trademark applications filed this year exceeded the total number of applications filed last year.
Since the beginning of 2022, 1967 such applications have already been submitted, and for the whole of 2021 - 1965. In 2020, there were only 23 such applications.
