Astronomers have discovered the most distant and oldest galaxy at the edge of the universe

Researchers have established that the galaxy GN-z11 is the most distant and oldest in the entire observable universe, defining its boundary.

Scientists keep looking for answers to questionsrelated to the size and age of our universe. However, huge scales and distances make such measurements much more difficult. A group of astronomers from the University of Tokyo claims to have identified the most distant cluster of stars, formed just a few hundred million years after the Big Bang.

They used HawaiianKeck I telescope for measuring redshiftgalaxy GN-z11, located at a distance of 13.4 billion light years from us. By identifying the chemical signatures of the ultraviolet light emanating from it, called emission lines, the team was able to improve the accuracy of the calculated distance (z-value) to the space object by 100 times.

This allowed astronomers to determine that this galaxy is the most distant and oldest ever discovered. In fact, it may define the boundary of the observable Universe.

Recall that earlier this year, astrophysicists discovered a new type of matter inside neutron stars.
