Abkhaz authorities restrict internet access due to miners

On December 28, the State Committee of Abkhazia for Communications, Mass Communications and Digital Development issuedan order to temporarily block sites used by cryptocurrency miners.

"Introduce a time limit by June 1, 2021subscribers in the information and telecommunications network "Internet" the possibility of using the list of domain names, indexes of pages of sites and network addresses, allowing them to carry out activities for the extraction of cryptocurrencies, "- said in the document.

Telecom operators have been instructed to carry out technical blocking measures.

The list of specific sites, access to which will be limited, is not provided.

In early December, the Cabinet of Ministers of Abkhazia banned cryptocurrency mining and limited the import of equipment for its implementation until June 1, 2021.

The police later reported on the shutdown of 3,783 ASIC miners. However, some miners manage to privately negotiate with the government on the import of equipment into the republic.

Due to the energy-intensive mining of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, Abkhazia is on the brink of a crisis - the republic does not have enough electricity to meet the growing needs of the population and the economy.
