Abkhazian authorities blamed miners for energy crisis

The leadership of the young republic believes that the problem of a shortage of electricity in the region is largely due to an increase in the production of cryptocurrencies.

Despite the introduction of an official ban onmining in 2018, residents continue to actively use energy-intensive equipment using cheap electricity. The customs service claims that in the last six months alone, ASICs worth more than $ 589 thousand have been imported into the country.

According to the director of operational and technological management of Chernomorenergo;Ruslana Kvarchia, currently summaryThe capacity of the equipment operating in the republic is at least 40-45 MW. With round-the-clock operation, the installations consume about 400 million kWh in 12 months, or more than 56% of the projected electricity shortage by the end of the year.

It is noteworthy that in such conditions the authorities did notintend to increase pressure on miners, and want to lift the ban on cryptocurrency mining activities, allowing them to work during the day. The government expects such a move to improve communication between energy suppliers, local administrations and miners.

Unlike Abkhazia, Iran is taking more drastic measures to combat shadow mining. More than 1,000 mining farms have been closed in the country since the beginning of the year.
