Scientists have created a desktop air filter that instantly kills coronavirus and anthrax

The research team has developed a compact air filter that captures airborne viruses and kills them instantly with high temperatures.

Scientists have long known that pathogens cannot survive temperatures above 70°C, but using this cleaning technology indoors canTherefore, researchers from the University of Houston decided to use foam metal as a filter, which emits a minimum of heat into the environment.

The team choseConventional nickel foam due to its availability, high porosity, flexibility, electrical conductivity, and good air permeability. The only obstacle was the low resistivity, which made it difficult for the foam metal to rise to 200 °C, at which point most microorganisms die almost instantly.

To solve the problem, the team simply stacked several layers of foam together and connected them to electrical wires. This made it possible to raise the filter temperature to 200 °C, while minimizing the amount of heat that escaped.

Researchers have created a prototype of a compactdevice that can be safely placed on a table. Laboratory tests have shown that after one pass of air through such a filter, 99.8% of the Covid-19 virus and 99.9% of anthrax spores are destroyed.

According to the developers, such systems can be used in schools, offices, airplanes and other places with a high concentration of people.

Earlier, we also reported on the development of a material that can increase up to 100 times under the influence of a weak electric current.
