Hong Kong police create CyberDefender platform to prevent crimes in the metaverse

Bureau of Cybersecurity andHong Kong Tech Crimes (CSTCB) launched the CyberDefender Metaverse platform to educate the public about the dangers associated with the Web3 industry and metaverses.

Law enforcement officials intend to prepare citizens for the “challenges of the digital era.” The platform hosted a presentation entitled Exploring the Metaverse, which discussed strategies for preventing crime in virtual worlds.

CSTCB Chief Inspector Ip Cheuk-yu (IpCheuk-yu) urged users of metaverses to be vigilant because investment fraud, unauthorized access to systems, theft of crypto assets and crimes of a sexual nature can be committed in metaverses.

“Decentralization of virtual assets inWeb3 increases the likelihood of cybercrime. Attackers are targeting users’ devices for storing cryptocurrencies, as well as virtual asset wallets and smart contracts,” said a CSTCB inspector.

Hong Kong police promised to do moreconduct educational seminars for young people, talking about the latest achievements in the field of information technology. We will also talk about crimes that involve the use of the latest technologies. According to law enforcement agencies, in the first quarter of 2023, 663 offenses related to virtual assets were registered. Total losses for victims amounted to $570 million, which is 75% more than in the first quarter of 2022.

Recently in the Chinese city of Nanjing I wasa platform for conducting research in the field of digital economy and metaverses is presented. The project was launched with the support of Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (NUIST).
