Mining is not a household need, so the electricity consumed for it should not be paid forat a reduced rate for the population, reported «RG» in the Ministry of Energy, commenting on the plans of the government of the Irkutsk region to give cryptocurrency mining the status of entrepreneurship.
The department clarified that the legislationdistinguishes between the consumption of electricity by citizens for their own household needs and for the purpose of doing business. Existing norms do not exclude the possibility of identifying consumption in a residential building for commercial activities and settlements with such a consumer at prices set for business entities.
Over two years, electricity consumption in Irkutskarea has grown tenfold. This is associated with the growing popularity of mining — cryptocurrency mining. If mining receives the status of entrepreneurship, then the electricity spent on it will have to be paid at business rates, which are higher than the rates for the population.
