US authorities imposed sanctions against Russian crypto exchanger

Over the past three years, exchange platform Suex has received more than $160 million in Bitcoin. The cryptocurrency came fromdarknet (closed segment of the Internet).

Foreign Assets Control DepartmentThe US Treasury Department (OFAC) announced the imposition of sanctions against the Russian crypto exchanger Suex, which is registered in Prague and also has offices in Moscow and St. Petersburg. American officials claim that the crypto exchanger facilitated the withdrawal of ransomware and scammers' funds. This is the first time in US history that the authorities have imposed sanctions on a crypto exchange.

The OFAC announcement lists 25 addresses,owned by Suex (in Bitcoin, Ethereum and Tether stablecoins). The crypto exchange has received more than $ 160 million in bitcoin over the past three years, according to analyst firm Chainalysis, which assisted the US Treasury in its investigation against Suex. Analysts claim that the cryptocurrency on the exchange platform came from the darknet (a closed segment of the Internet).

The introduction of sanctions against Suex provides for a ban on American citizens from working with the platform, as well as the freezing of crypto exchanger assets in the United States.

In mid-July, the White House was formeda special commission that deals with the suppression of the activities of hackers using ransomware viruses. The administration of US President Joe Biden has begun to closely monitor transfers of funds in digital assets that are used to pay hackers.
