The IMF urged to regulate cryptocurrencies and abandon their ban

The regulator's chief economist, Gita Gopinath, believes that states should not lose control overthe digital asset industry.

States should pursue policiesregulation of cryptocurrencies, because if they are banned, the authorities will completely lose control over the digital asset market. This was stated by the chief economist of the IMF Gita Gopinath at the conference of the National Council for Applied Economic Research (NCEAR).

Gopinath noted that to completely bancryptocurrencies are not possible because their users can use decentralized tools that are not subject to any legal rules and regulations.

“Many exchanges are offshore and do not obey the rules of a particular country,” said the chief economist of the IMF.

In early December, the IMF announced that Geeta Gopinath would take over as First Deputy Managing Director Jeffrey Okamoto. She will be the first woman to hold this post.

Later, the chairman of the Duma committee on the financial marketAnatoly Aksakov said that the authorities are discussing two opposite approaches to the regulation of cryptocurrencies - from a complete ban to legalization. According to Aksakov, in 2022 there should be certainty on this issue.
