Popular Hong Kong newspaper advertises bitcoin

One of the largest print media in Hong Kong, Apple Daily, has placed a bitcoin ad on the front page.

“Bitcoin will never abandon you” – reads the main slogan of the morning edition of the popular daily publication. The statement is signed with the name Satoshi Nakamoto.

The slogan sounds like a rebuke to big banks that are mired in controversy, especially next to the Cantonese text: “Banks, you are not the one abandoning me today– I'm leaving you."

Further, the ad copy reads:

Bitcoin – this is digital money.It is not issued or controlled by any government or corporation. No one can stop you from transacting online and it cannot be disabled. Bitcoin is available to anyone, regardless of their nationality, gender or beliefs. Bitcoin started with GENESIS BLOCK during the 2009 financial crisis. His time is approaching.

Apple Daily CEO Jimmy Lai wasarrested by authorities two weeks ago on charges of violating China's National Security Law. Lai's arrest sparked massive protests by his supporters on the streets of Hong Kong, many of whom condemned the restriction of free speech. In the midst of all this controversy, Apple Daily's stock price jumped a whopping 1,100 percent.
