Optimism removes 17,000 wallets from free cryptocurrency giveaway lists

The Optimism project, before distributing its cryptocurrency for free, carried out an operation to identify the addresses involved in the Sybil attack and removed them from the distribution list.

Second level solution team forscaling Ethereum Optimism on May 23 reported on Twitter that it had deleted  17,000 cryptocurrency wallets from the lists of those registered for the free distribution of cryptocurrency:

“Optimism is for people, not for the Sibyl(a spam attack that floods the network with fake accounts. – Bits.media). We carefully analyzed the first free distribution of cryptocurrencies and identified the scammers. We are pleased to announce that we have removed another 17 thousand sybil addresses and recovered more than 14 million OPs. Goodbye, Sibyls!

Fraudsters, having received insider information, that the project is going to hold a free distribution of cryptocurrencies in the future, they like to create many cryptocurrency wallets for the project. Thus, a large volume of freely distributed cryptocurrency falls into the hands of criminals.

The developers of Optimism reported thatcryptocurrencies that were planned to be sent to blocked wallets will be redistributed between the remaining addresses. The team reported that they carried out a thorough check of addresses through special filters and thanked everyone who helped identify the addresses of scammers. In addition, the project published a list of deleted addresses and encouraged users to report any information about a potential Sybil attack.

The most notorious case of such spam attackoccurred when Divergence Ventures used multiple addresses to receive the maximum amount of free cryptocurrency during a Ribbon Finance draw in which it had previously invested. The fraudulent scheme helped earn Divergence Ventures $3.2 million in cryptocurrency, but the project later returned the money when the scam was discovered.

Optimism announced a free giveawaycryptocurrencies on April 26. It was planned that 250,000 wallets would participate in the distribution. The developers were going to give away 5% of the total cryptocurrency, and another 14% were intended for future drawings. The remaining assets were planned to be distributed among the ecosystem fund, public goods financing, major contributors and private investors.
