Europol adds Wasabi and Samourai crypto wallets to the list of the biggest threats on the darknet

The growing popularity of Wasabi and Samourai Bitcoin wallets with the ability to mix coins makes it difficulta study of activity on the darknet follows from a report by the European Union Police Service (Europol).

Both wallets use CoinJoin technology to anonymize bitcoin transactions. Europol notes:

"Improved wallet capabilities based on the CoinJoin concept have become a major threat alongside centralized mixers."

The report mentions that wallets offer additional features beyond the simple integration of CoinJoin and the Tor network:

“Samourai, for example, offers remoteSMS commands with which you can delete information. These wallets do not necessarily remove the link between the origin of funds and their purpose, but they certainly complicate the tracking of cryptocurrencies. "

Europol notes that the administrators of someDarknet marketplaces are trying to integrate CoinJoin-enabled wallets as their default payment option. The share of users using hardware wallets is also growing. Some platforms use multisig addresses or cryptocurrency payment systems without using wallets.

Europol experts also note the strengtheningdecentralizing the darknet ecosystem. According to the report, there has been an increase in the number of small marketplaces focused on specialized features and offerings for their users. The relatively short life cycles of such markets pose a problem for law enforcement.
