Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney accuses Fortnite token issuer of fraud

Co-founder of game publisher EpicGames believes that the team that released the Fortnite (FNT) token is violating intellectual property laws, since this project is related to the game of the same name.

Tim Sweeney took to Twitter to accuse "cryptocurrency markets" of trading unofficial and unauthorized tokens bearing the Fortnite name:

“There is no Fortnite token.Twitter accounts promoting projects like these are scams. Epic's lawyers are already dealing with these scammers. It is a disgrace to the cryptocurrency markets that allow such projects to exist.”

The game publisher was outraged that the tokenFortnite (FNT), hosted on the decentralized exchanges SushiSwap, PancakeSwap and CronaSwap, has a name similar to the name of the popular online shooter of the battle royale subgenre from Epic Games - Fortnite.

“You cannot use the name and images of Fortnite without permission to sell a product not related to the game,” the businessman told the developers.

Sweeney warns that this project is a scam:

“Anyone who is promoting the project using Twitter under the @fortnite_token account is engaging in illegal activity and lying to the community.”

In turn, the Twitter user himself, who actively promotes FNT, said that the project is not a scam:

“FNT is an honest cryptocurrency project,community-driven, created by fans of the game Fortnite, with no specific owner, company or CEO behind it deciding the future of the project.”

The team behind the launch of FNT invited users to issue NFTs using the Fortnite token.

Using a popular brand asbait to promote a project has become quite common practice. Just remember the scam of the team behind the SQUID token, which used the popular TV series “The Squid Game” for promotion. The damage from the fraudulent project was so widespread that it attracted the attention of the Binance crypto exchange. The site stated that it plans to return the money lost by SQUID investors and transfer the evidence discovered during the investigation to law enforcement agencies.
