Digital Euro may be launched in mid-2021

The European Commission and the European Central Bank (ECB) made a joint statement on the release of the digital euro. Both organizationsconfirmed the fact that the digital currency, if it will be launched, will supplement cash and "payment solutions provided by a private sector".

“Taking into account the digitalisation, rapid changes in the payment environment and the emergence of cryptoassets, the ECB is studying the possibility of issuing a digital euro”, - the announcement

ECB will review the launch of the digital euromid-2021, after the completion of the public consultations. They finished on January 12 of this year, during the on-line survey more than 8000 answers were received.

Member of the Executive Council of the ECB and chairman of the target group for the digital euro Fabio Panetta carried out the following results:

"The survey showed great interest from citizens and companiesEurope for the formation of the concept of digital euro. The opinions of citizens, business and all interested parties are of primary importance to us. Now we estimate which options for using the digital euro will suit the best".

In addition, the ECB and the European Commission declared,what potential problems are studied, which may arise in the result of the possible introduction of a digital euro. The release of CBDC has technical, political and legal considerations that are important to consider.

The head of the ECB Christian Lagard has always been considereddigital euro in a positive key, naming such currencies unique. In her opinion, the release of a digital euro may become necessary for the "maintenance of monetary supremacy" in the region.
