Bitcoin works without internet thanks to Blockstream satellites

Blockstream, a developer of infrastructure services for the Bitcoin ecosystem, announced the launch of an updatedsoftware versions for accessing the first cryptocurrency network via satellite.

Blockstream Satellite 2.0 includes a standardized data transfer protocol, an expanded bandwidth channel, additional coverage areas and the ability to synchronize a full bitcoin node without an Internet connection. Previously, the service required an Internet connection for initial synchronization.

Blockstream is committed to this project.solve the problem of using bitcoin in the absence of an Internet connection. The startup uses six orbital stations to exchange data with a cryptocurrency network in almost all populated regions of the Earth. With the latest update, a satellite has been added to the system to further cover the Asia-Pacific region.

Blockstream Satellite 2.0 no longer uses its own data transfer protocol, as before. Instead, the service was switched to the DVB-S2 standard, which is supposed to increase its reliability and data exchange capabilities. In addition, the update contains new technology designed to reduce the amount of transmitted data by more than 50%.

The first version of Blockstream Satellite software will stop working on June 1. The equipment available to users will be able to synchronize with the system after updating the software.

In addition, the company will launch specialized sets of equipment for working with Blockstream Satellite in the base and advanced versions for $ 299 and $ 799, respectively.
