Hawaii opens regulatory sandbox for issuers of digital currencies

The Hawaiian government has announced the opening of a regulatory sandbox for companies engaged in the development of digital currencies.

The two-year initiative will allow issuers totheir activities in the state without a special state license to transfer funds. According to the governor, the “Laboratory of Innovation in the Field of Digital Currencies” should help government officials better understand the peculiarities of the functioning of this class of assets and make the necessary changes to legislation.

Information collectedwill also be used to determine the future of digital currencies in Hawaii.

State Financial Institutionspublished an official inaction statement, so any companies participating in the program will be able to legally provide money transfer services without a license. However, for accreditation, participants will have to undergo financial and technical expertise, as well as possess the necessary capital. Applications from applicants are accepted until May 1, 2020.

Shortly before this announcement, the Swedish Central Bank proposed launching an international hub for digital currency research.
