FinCEN Appoints Cryptocurrency Advisor for First Time in History

The United States Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) has hired its first digital currency consultant.

Michelle Korver, who joinedThe US Department of Justice, as the first digital currency advisor at the end of 2017, will now advise FinCEN on the role of cryptocurrency in financial crime.

Korver worked for 10 years as an assistant attorneyat the US Attorney's Office, where she investigated cybercrimes and national security violations. Since 2013, Michelle has been involved in anti-money laundering operations with the Department of Homeland Security and private technology companies, and will now guide FinCEN's strategy to prevent illegal financial practices involving cryptocurrencies.

The new appointment once again emphasized the closeFinCEN's focus on cryptocurrency. In early July, the agency announced that oversight of digital asset transactions would be one of its top national priorities in the fight against terrorist financing and money laundering.
