Xbox director speaks out on metaverses and Play-to-Earn games

Microsoft Xbox gaming chief Phil Spencer has expressed interest in metaverses, but has expressed doubts about Play-to-Earn games due to NFT speculation.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Phil SpencerSpencer) spoke about his attitude towards metaverses. He claims that gamers have been in metaverses for about 30 years. Each game features its own 3D world where people can interact and have gaming experiences, be it World of Warcraft, Roblox, or regular racing games.

“It doesn’t surprise me at all that many gamersdon't understand how metaverses differ from games. In regular games, each person also has an avatar and can walk around in the shared game space, turn on their voice and interact with other participants from anywhere,” Spencer said.

At the beginning of the year, Microsoft CEOSatya Nadella said that metaverses help unite the computer and real worlds. Spencer confirmed that the commercial use of the metaverse continues to be of interest to Microsoft recently.

The head of Xbox noted that still withis wary of games that operate on the Play-to-Earn (P2E) principle due to speculation in the NFT market. However, he acknowledged that game monetization has been around for many years, so P2E-based games could still find interesting uses.

Not all cryptocurrency enthusiasts share this point of view. For example, American billionaire Mark Cuban said that buying real estate in metaverses is a very stupid idea.
