US imposes sanctions against hackers who stole $620 million in Ethereum

The US authorities have imposed restrictions on the Lazarus Group, which is associated with North Korea.

At the same time, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced the involvement of the Lazarus Group and another APT3 hacker group in the theft of the Ethereum cryptocurrency for $620 million.

“The FBI, together with the Treasury Department and other partners inThe U.S. government will continue to crack down on the DPRK's illegal activities, including cybercrime and cryptocurrency theft, in order to generate profit for the regime," the FBI said in a statement.

In March, the Ronin blockchain bridge was hacked, from whichwithdrew a cryptocurrency worth over $625 million. Attackers exploited the vulnerability on March 23, but the problem was discovered only on March 29, when one of the users was unable to withdraw 5 thousand Ethereum.

The Ronin hack is currently the largestin the field of decentralized finance. It surpassed the previous record theft of 93.7k Ethereum from the Wormhole protocol, which occurred in February this year.
