Member of the House of Representatives Tom Emmer, in a letter addressed to US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, demandedexplanations regarding the sanctions imposed on the Tornado Cash Mixer.
“The growing adoption of decentralized technologies will certainly present new challenges for OFAC. However, the technology is neutral, and the expectation of privacy is also neutral,” the congressman wrote.
According to him, sanctions against the mixer are unique in that they are not imposed on an individual or legal entity, but on a code that provides privacy.
“The backend will invariably function asanonymization technology while the Ethereum network is running. Who or what organization, according to OFAC, is responsible for introducing control over the Tornado Cash blockchain contracts?” Emmer asked.
Earlier, members of the decentralized autonomous organization Tornado DAO called on the community to hire a team of lawyers to appeal the blocking of the service.
Later, the Coin Center, a human rights organization focused on the crypto industry, announced its intention to challenge the restrictions imposed by the United States.
