A U.S. Army spokesman said his research team plans to introduce a prototype artillery gun with a range of up to 1850 km by 2023.
According to the leader of the cross-functional team, developing long-range precision gun systems, Colonel John Raffert, the next generation gun will be able to conduct “deep fire” and strike strategic targets within enemy defenses.
His group has been working on the project since 2017 and is now overcoming the first technicalobstacles. However, the colonel claims that the army is currently collaborating with the Research Center for the Missile Testing Ground to confirm the technical feasibility of implementing this weapon system and is preparing to conduct an early ballistic assessment based on the Dalgren Navy.
Tests will show whether the required range can actually be achieved when using not too expensive shells.
The US military expects"strategic gun" will help deal with advanced surface radars, coastal defenses and enemy air defense systems. One way to overcome these obstacles is to fire long-range fires at enemy strategic installations and infrastructure to disrupt networks and create a window for advancement.
China is also actively developing its artillery systems and plans to equip its warships with high-power electromagnetic weapons.
