The number of infected Electrum wallets reached 152 thousand

Cybersecurity company Malwarebytes said digital storage owners have become victimsintruders. Total losses are estimated at $4.6 million.

Electrum Bitcoin wallet affected by attacksusers of 152 thousand accounts, approximate losses amounted to $4.6 million, Malwarebytes specialists reported. They were able to discover new software called Trojan.BeamWinHTTP, which is involved in the spread of the ElectrumDoSMiner botnet, which was identified earlier.

According to experts, the largest numberinfections occurred in the Asia-Pacific region, Brazil and Peru. It is known that the main part of the hosting infrastructure of ElectrumDoSMiner is located in Ukraine. The attacks are mainly targeted at new PCs.

The hacking of the Electrum wallet infrastructure began inat the end of December 2018. Then, users lost more than 200 bitcoins (just under $1 million at the exchange rate of that time). At the beginning of this month, data appeared that the Electrum system was under a DoS attack, carried out by 140 thousand bots. Service clients are redirected to compromised versions of the software, which instantly steal their funds.
