The researchers created a prototype high-performance lithium-sulfur battery, whose capacity is four times higher than that of existing lithium-ion analogues.

One of the main constraints to developmentmobile electronics and electric transport today is the low charge-to-weight ratio of the battery. However, a team of scientists from Monash University has announced the development of technology that can create batteries that can power a phone for five days in a row or run an electric car for more than 1,000 miles.km without recharging.

In the course of their work, the researchers usedmaterials of standard lithium-ion batteries, but redesigned the sulfur cathodes so that they can withstand higher loads without compromising overall capacity or performance. Thanks to the bridge method of communication between the elements, the device has been functioning stably for a long time.

According to the developers, the new designslithium-sulfur batteries require less materials and additional processing, so the cost of their production is lower than that of modern lithium-ion devices. At the same time, they have less impact on the environment and are able to work much longer.

The research team has already patentedproduction technology (PCT / AU 2019/051239), and also received from the Government of Australia and international industry partners more than $ 2.5 million for testing batteries for cars and electrical networks in 2020.

Previously, we also reported on the development of high-power potassium batteries that charge in 10 seconds.
