Nvidia May Resume Production of Specialized GPUs for Mining

According to Nvidia's CFO Colette Kress, the company could resume production of its line of mining graphics cards if there is sufficient demand.

Speaking at the JP Morgan Tech conference, shestated that CMP GPUs will enter the market only if miners account for a significant share of purchases. The company does not have accurate data on how customers use the purchased graphics cards, but believes that the lion's share of the demand is still provided by gamers.

Colette Kress also said that Nvidia currently estimatesDemand for the company's products exceeds supply. However, it does not exclude that the growing popularity of cryptocurrencies may change the situation, and then the manufacturer will reconsider its policy.

According to Barron's analyst estimates, onlyIn the third quarter of 2020, Nvidia earned $175 million from selling standard video cards to Ethereum (ETH) miners. However, CMP GPUs are a more attractive option for mining digital currencies as they are cheaper due to the lack of ports required by gamers.
