New President of Colombia: “Cryptocurrencies – This is pure energy."

The new President of the Republic of Colombia, who won the elections at the beginning of the year, spoke out in support of Bitcoin and digital assets.

Gustavo Francisco Petro Urregowill replace Ivan Duque Marguez in August this year. The president-elect spoke about the “strength and power” of Bitcoin. According to 62-year-old Gustavo Petro, cryptocurrencies can become a tool of democracy and return power from governments and banks back to the people:

“Virtual currencies are pure information, and therefore energy.”

Bitcoin is recognized as legal tenderonly in El Salvador, but not in Colombia. And the new president does not promise to take such a step, especially in light of the fall in the cryptocurrency market. However, Gustavo Pedro has repeatedly advocated the legalization and regulation of cryptocurrencies in Colombia.

At the beginning of June, the Colombian Parliament received a bill, the authors of which propose to allow bank clients to link their bank accounts with accounts on cryptocurrency exchanges.
