More than $ 1.4 billion was laundered through crypto exchanges this year

According to a study by Peckshield, in the first half of 2020, more than $ 1.4 billion were conducted through cryptocurrency exchanges for the purpose of money laundering.

After 12 months of collecting and analyzing data fromdifferent sources, the team has identified over 100 million transactions and about 50 million accounts on exchanges associated with the shadow sector. Their analysis showed that this year 147 thousand bitcoins related to criminal activity were transferred to exchanges. At the same time, part of the funds passed through the mixers to complicate their tracking.

According to Peckshield, largepart of military-technical cooperation related to hacker attacks,darknet, gambling and other similar directions, is laundered through 10 leading crypto exchanges: Huobi, Binance, Okex, ZB, Gate.io, Bitmex, Luno, HaoBTC, Bithum and Coinbase.

During the study, the team tracked addresses fromhigh risk and other digital assets. During the observation period, only a small part of the “dirty” ones coins and tokens (worth $1.62 billion) was blacklisted, and $15.9 billion in cryptocurrency went through mixing services and most of it was then successfully laundered.

This situation does not suit the exchanges themselves, which are often used by criminals, so they are also trying in every possible way to fight the flow of criminal money.
