Mining on AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT: hashrate, overclocking, profitability

Mining on AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT: hashrate, overclocking, profitability

On July 7, 2019, AMD introduced a new line of graphics cards to the marketgeneration of Navi RX5700 series.Graphics cardsThis range has three varieties:

 • RX5700;
 • RX5700XT;
 • RX5700XT 50th Anniversary Edition.

They use chips based on the latest7-nm FinFET semiconductor technology and theoretically should demonstrate the best indicators of energy efficiency during mining due to the reduced size of electronic components and a decrease in the amount of current consumed.

The number 50, which is used in the markingAMD RX5700 graphics cards mark AMD's 50th anniversary, which it celebrates in 2019. For the first time in this series, AMD video cards use memory controllers that support GDDR6 technology.

In this review we will look at graphics cards.the average price level is AMD RX 5700 XT and AMD RX 5700. Mining on video cards is now experiencing a period of stagnation and experienced miners and green beginners were looking forward to the emergence of gpu-devices with an innovative architecture.

Packaging and appearance of AMD Radeon RX 5700

Packaging design and graphic appearanceNavi adapters have not undergone significant changes. There are several video cards with turbine cooling, which are not recommended to be installed in the GPU rig due to the increased noise level, as well as models with two and three fans.

Some manufacturers, such as Sapphire andPowerColor use decorative elements in the exterior design of the product. Almost all graphic adapters of this series have a back part covered with a metal backplate. On the side there are HDMI and DisplayPort inputs for connecting monitors, and in the upper right corner an additional power connector 8 pin + 6 pin. For many video adapters, the Radeon logo has a red backlight.

It seems that the current trend is “if the card is notlights up, then it’s not gaming ”began to prevail in AMD reference devices. However, it is unlikely that anyone will sleep in the same room with a working mining farm and, therefore, illumination will not create problems for anyone at night. Moreover, it is not too bright. The RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT video cards are equipped with a cooling system with an aluminum radiator, copper tubes and fans with dispersion blades. The casing has openings on the sides to increase airflow efficiency.

AMD Radeon RX 5700 Specifications

Let's start with the main indicators, and then look at the mining performance of the new AMD RX 5700 XT and RX 5700 cards.

A key feature of Navi video acceleratorsis RDNA technology, which includes not only microarchitecture, but also successful technological developments of previous generations. The Reds did not complicate their lives and decided to improve the current Zen processors, rightly believing that the proven technology will be able to reveal its full potential on the new architecture.

In principle, the card is well charged right out of the box and, most likely, manual overclocking will not greatly affect the hashrate. But, let's see the test results.

Testing: hash on different algorithms

In 2020, many crypto algorithms will be tested onAdvanced Micro Devices Inc's new GPU is no longer useful. Some are occupied by ASICs, others, such as RandomX (Monero), are more profitable on the CPU, and others are designed for NVidia. In addition, driver developers are late in releasing updates, which also greatly affects the performance of the RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT in virtual currency mining.

Production efficiency on various Navi graphics cardsmanufacturers may vary by 5-7%. Much depends on the version of the driver and mining software. Profitability RX 5700 will help you calculate WhatToMine mining calculator.

Overclocking AMD Radeon RX 5700

Navi GPUs work withmining programs based on the Ethash algorithm Claymore’s Miner v15.0, PhoenixMiner 4.9, as well as the WildRigMulti 0.19.0, xmr-stak and lolMiner 0.9.7 utilities. You must install one of the latest versions of the AMD video driver (at least 19.9.1). For overclocking, it is recommended to use the OverdriveNTool program.

 • Download the program from the developer page https://forums.guru3d.com/threads/overdriventool-tool-for-amd-gpus.416116/
 • Unzip to a convenient place for you on the disk.
 • Open the settings.
 • Write down the parameters of the core frequency and memory.
 • Perform undervolting.
 • Set the cooler rotation mode to the maximum allowable temperature and power limit
 • Save the profile and click Apply.

Now you need to create a bat-file in which the commandr - resets the settings for all video cards, and then the p - command applies the profile you saved to them. The executive file must be saved in the OverdriveNTool.exe folder and create a shortcut on it, which we place in Windows startup.

Sample batch file for 5 video cards:

 • @echo Overdrive downvolt setting up
 • @echo off
 • timeout 90
 • OverdriveNTool.exe -r0 -r1 -r2 -r3 -r4 -r5
 • timeout 15
 • OverdriveNTool.exe -p0 ″ 1 ″ -p1 ″ 1 ″ -p2 ″ 1 ″ -p3 ″ 1 ″ -p4 ″ 1 ″ -p5 ″ 1 ″

Of course, you can install an overclocking programand downvolting of MSI Afterburner video cards. But OverdriveNTool will provide better and more reliable results. However, everyone can compare these two utilities and make their own choice.

How to reduce the power consumption of video cards?

We regulate the consumption of rx 5700 in mining withusing the same OverdriveNTool. Testing has shown that the card can operate stably at a core voltage of 860mV at a frequency of 1700, consuming 115W from the socket on a Corsair 80+ Gold unit. At the same time, it demonstrates a speed of 52Mh/s; for comparison, the RX 580 card accelerates to 30Mh/s while consuming 89W.

Bios 5700 can be replaced with older firmwaremodel RX 5700 XT, this will slightly improve its performance. Modified rx 5700 firmware for mining has not yet been created. At least, such information on the forums could not be found.

Profitability and relevance of the purchase

The popular online service WhatToMine hasGPUs tab, which displays the rating of the most profitable video cards. You must indicate the cost of electricity in the Power cost column (for example, $0.06) and press Enter. The current profit of the RX 5700 XT is $0.85 per day. We look at the price in stores — the price ranges from 22,000 rubles to 35,000, that is, the cheapest model costs $380.

In this situation, the card will pay for itself in 15 months. Not a bad result, and given that in the fall of 2020, video accelerators with 4GB of memory will no longer be able to mine ETH and ETC, Navi’s profitability may increase. For comparison, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 video card earns $1.10 without deducting electricity, at a cost of 42,000 to 60,000 rubles. Draw your own conclusions. Happy mining!
