Microsoft tests Bitcoin user identification

The beta version of the Microsoft-led decentralized identity system ION officially launched inBitcoin’s main network this Wednesday, writes Bitcoin Magazine.

ION was first announced in May 2019 asopen source project. It is a second-level network with its own node structure, working independently of its creator. Its main purpose is to maintain a decentralized identifier (DID) system, which in the future can replace the usernames used today.

"DID confirms ownership as privatekey when signing a transaction on the bitcoin network. Individual ION nodes in the secondary network will be responsible for keeping records of these DIDs and creating timestamps for them in the main Bitcoin blockchain as confirmation ”- says the publication.

As the developers explain, the toolsdecentralized identification will allow users to control their data on the network using unique records with cryptographic protection, as well as make sure that the accounts belong to other users. On the modern Internet, centralized entities such as Facebook and Google are responsible for this function.

ION development is hosted by Microsoft.the Decentralized Identity Foundation (DIF) consortium, whose stated goal is to create technical standards for decentralized identification systems. It also includes IBM, ConsenSys, BitPay, Gemini and other companies. At the beta testing stage, they will manage their own nodes to collect information about the health and possible problems of the system.
