Meta Settles U.S. Trademark Lawsuit over Dfinity Logo

Meta. Platforms Inc agreed to settle a trademark lawsuit filed by a blockchain non-profit organizationDfinity Foundation regarding the Meta infinity logo, according to a joint filing in San Francisco federal court.

On Monday, Meta and Dfinity asked the courtterminate the case with prejudice, which means it cannot be reopened. Spokespeople for the parties did not immediately respond to a request for more information on Tuesday.

The Swiss company Dfinity Internet Computer is an “infinite” a public blockchain network designed to host smart contracts.

Dfinity sued Meta last year, alleging that the logo adopted by Meta after changing its name from Facebook would cause confusion with Dfinity's infinity trademarks.

Meta described its logo as “continuousloop”, reminiscent of the letter “M” and an infinity sign, symbolizing “endless horizons in the metaverse”. U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer dismissed Dfinity's original complaint in November but allowed the company to amend the suit. Breuer said the Meta logo is unlikely to cause consumer confusion, citing differences in logo designs and the fact that Dfinity customers – “technologically savvy developers”.

Dfinity filed an amended complaint in December.Meta is still facing trademark lawsuits from virtual reality company MetaX and investment firm Metacapital over the name change.
