Mercedes Benz plans blockchain integration for identification

German transnational automobile corporation Daimler AG, producing trucks andpremium cars such as Mercedes Benz have unveiled a number of blockchain-based projects that are currently being worked on.

During the Startup Autobahn Expo event, held on September 24, 2020, the leading car manufacturer shared information about its ongoing projects in the field of decentralized identification. The German manufacturer is working on them in collaboration with leading companies in the field of decentralized ledger technology such as Spherity and Ontology (ONT).

In particular, within the framework of cooperation between Daimler andSpherity is developing a blockchain-based decentralized identity solution powered by Hyperledger Indy. The team says the system allows businesses to easily verify their identity, credentials / details, and automatically sign agreements.

In turn, the goal of Daimler's cooperation withOntology blockchain is to develop MoveX, a standalone decentralized identity solution that aims to enable customers to use a variety of mobile services without compromising privacy.

Commenting on innovative initiatives, Daimler Mobility's head of blockchain, Dr. Harry Behrens, emphasized that decentralized identity has tremendous benefits for customers.

«The innovation allows you to combine services fromdifferent companies and provide them to the client as if they were provided by one company. Clients are identified once throughout the system, and thanks to this, they can sign transactions from any storage facility and with any operator. This is one of the advantages of blockchain and distributed ledger technology. There is a whole revolution behind this.

Daimler and the Mercedes Benz brand have been around for quite some timeare trying their hand at the blockchain technology ecosystem. In 2018, Daimler released the MobiCoin token as part of plans to encourage environmentally friendly driving habits.

It should be noted that the Mercedes brand for the first timeannounced plans to implement blockchain technology back in February 2019, when the company announced plans to test launch a revolutionary technology that provides supply chain transparency.

In January 2020, Mercedes Benz launched a blockchain pilot project aimed at tracking carbon dioxide emissions in the cobalt supply chain.
