This was reported by the Tehran Times with reference to the representative of the department Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi.

The energy industry faced two challenges in 2021, a drought-induced decline in hydroelectric power generation and cryptocurrency mining, officials said.

According to Mashhadi, the work of miners wears outelectrical grids and transformers, creating risks of power outages. Violators face not only fines, but also the obligation to compensate for the damage caused to the infrastructure.

According to Iran International TV channel, Iranian miners consume up to 1,500 MW of electricity daily. Legal companies account for 13% of consumption.

Recall that in July 2019, Iran recognized the mining of cryptocurrencies as an industrial activity.
