Iranian general advises using bitcoin to circumvent US sanctions

Said Mohammed, Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps – elite unit of the armed forcesIran– called for circumventing US sanctions using cryptocurrencies.

We need more sophisticated mechanisms to circumvent sanctions. Therefore, we want to actively use cryptocurrencies to conduct trade with other countries.

Iran has been subject to U.S. sanctions since 1979. Over the past few years, Iranian authorities have called for the use of cryptocurrencies to circumvent these sanctions.

Late last year, Iranian President HassanRouhani called on Islamic countries to create a single digital currency that would act as an alternative to the US dollar and help cope with "American hegemony."

Iranian developer Zia Sadr, who is collaborating with authorities on integrating blockchain systems, said in an interview with the New York Times:

No sanctions can be imposed on bitcoin. Neither the US government, nor any other government, nor any financial institution can stop cryptocurrency transactions.
