Engineers have developed a “smart” a patch that automatically delivers various medications to the area of a chronic wound and is controlled remotely via a smartphone.
Chronic wounds are one of the most dangerouscomplications of diabetes and are the leading cause of limb amputation. However, proper treatment is problematic due to their complex nature. However, a team of researchers from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Harvard Medical School has created a high-tech patch that effectively promotestissue healing and hair growth.
This compact wearable device is equipped withtiny needles through which drugs are injected into the damaged areas. Despite their small size, they are able to penetrate under the upper layer of the wound, but with minimal pain and inflammation. In this case, the patch allows you to enter several drugs at once, necessary at various stages of regeneration.
The team tested the device on mice with diabetesand damage to the full thickness of the skin. In experimental animals, complete healing of wounds without scar formation was observed, which indicates good speed and quality of treatment. The developers have already filed a patent application.
