The German Center for Aviation and Space (DLR) has created a functioning prototype of a multi-purpose unmanned electric tractor.

The U-Shift model consists of an electricU-shaped drive that attaches to different modules depending on the current needs of the owner. The vehicle is designed for round-the-clock operation in urban environments and can be used as a tractor for removable capsules of a bus, truck, postal, commercial or other type of vehicle.

The current prototype is remote controlled, but2024 developers plan to make itunmanned. In the future, the team also plans to improve the performance of the drivetrain and battery system, as well as improve the chassis and hoist designs.

The modular concept will allow companies to use the electric towing vehicle for a wide range of tasks and to shape more flexible business models.
