"Bitcoin cannot be a means of payment." BIS appreciated cryptocurrency

Benoît Coeuret of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) believes that the main cryptocurrency is too volatile touse it to pay.

Head of the Innovation Center, Bank for InternationalSettlement (BIS) Benoit Köré said in an interview with Bloomberg that Bitcoin can be considered an investment vehicle. However, in his opinion, the main cryptocurrency did not pass the test for the status of a payment instrument, as it is too volatile.

“Bitcoin can be an investment vehicle, but not for me to judge or give advice. But it did not pass the test to be a payment instrument - simply because its value is constantly changing, ”says the head of the BIS innovation center.

According to Köré, the world's central banks are now studying the prospects for issuing their own digital currencies in order to ensure the financial security of citizens and come up with safer payment methods.

“Central banks are focused on an instrument that would provide liquidity, security and that could be used in the global payment system,” explained Benoit Koret.

In April, Norges Bank will present a report onown project of a national digital currency, which is being developed so that users can “pay efficiently and securely” with Norwegian kroner. The head of the Norwegian regulator Oystein Olsen has already called bitcoin "too expensive and unstable."
