CERN will build a new 100-kilometer particle accelerator for $ 23 billion

The European Organization for Nuclear Research has approved a plan to build a new large hadron collider with a length of 100 km.

In addition to an impressive value of $ 23 million, the futurethe supercollider will be able to work with particle energies of more than 100 TeV, which is six times higher than the current LHC. His key tasks will be to study the interaction of Higgs bosons with other elementary particles, as well as to study the secrets of dark matter and other mysteries of the standard model of physics.

The creation of the future accelerator will take place intwo stages. At first, it will be able to work with electrons and positrons to maximize the production of Higgs bosons. The second iteration will be a proton-proton collider designed to produce new particles that could expand our understanding of the physical foundations of the universe or even replace the current one.

The construction of a new tunnel should begin by2038, but the main problem of the project is a huge budget. The amount is so large that CERN will have to look for funds outside the EU or create an international organization to attract leading countries to research.
