US regulator accused BitMEX of illegal activity

US Commodity Futures Trading Commission(CFTC) has filed a civil lawsuit against the operators and leaders of the BitMEX derivatives exchange in a New York court for conducting illegal transactions and violating AML / CFT regulations.

According to the statement, the regulator accuses the tradingplatform for refusing to register and illegally providing services to American retail traders using $1 trillion in leveraged funds without complying with KYC and AML procedures. The CFTC is seeking the forfeiture of all ill-gotten gains, payment of monetary penalties, and a permanent injunction againstconducting trading activities.

In addition, the New York District Attorney filedaccusation of conspiracy, violation of the Bank Secrecy Act and bribery of foreign officials to four heads of the exchange. The Justice Department has already announced the arrest of BitMEX CTO Reed Dwyer. The defendants face up to five years in prison and a $ 250,000 fine.

The exchange denies all allegations and assures users that it will continue to operate as usual.

Let us recall that in September Binance was sued for facilitating the laundering of $9.4 million.
