More than a dozen Twitter accounts were hacked on Wednesday and used to execute a bitcoin scam.
Famous names with millions of subscribers were compromised before they could respond to a phishing attack and remove fake messages.
Tweets promised users a distribution of 5,000 BTC fromunknown site Cryptoforhealth, doubling the users' sent coins. Before the messages were deleted, 12.86 BTC were sent to the addresses of the attackers.
The scam went in two waves: one message was intended for high-ranking officials, and the other was for cryptocurrency companies.
At the same time, the attacks were coordinated toNotable Twitter accounts: Chanpen Zhao, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Kanye West, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Michael Bloomberg, Warren Buffett.
On the celebrity pages, the hackers posted the following message: "I return to the community all bitcoins sent to the address below, doubly!If you send $1000, I'll send $2000 back.You can only do it for 30 minutes."
In addition, several well-known financial services and crypto platforms such as Cash App, Ripple, Apple, Uber, Gemini, KuCoin, Binance, and Coinbase have also come under attack by hackers.
Such a massive hacking caused a wave of indignation andcalls to turn off the social network. Experts are confident that the scam attack became possible due to the vulnerability of the social network itself and began an investigation. A Twitter spokesman said the company is working to resolve the issue. Twitter has limited the ability of users to clarify the circumstances, and hacked accounts are not yet able to publish anything.
